Houses in Highland Vista
Highland Vista was established in 1952 and developed by the Lusk Corporation, which built many notable neighborhoods in Tucson during the 1950s and 1960s including Indian Ridge Estates, and San Rafael Estates. They became the 5th largest builder in America at one time. They also won the prestigious National Association of Home Builder’s Award of Merit for 5 consecutive years. In fact, the Highland Vista neighborhood won one of those awards.
The homes here tend to be 2 to 4 bedrooms with 2 baths, and clock in between 1200 sq. ft. to 2200 sq. ft. The lot sizes are usually around 1/5 acre. Homes are some type of masonry which includes either red brick, painted block, or burnt adobe. The homes are ranch style which usually include carports, but over the years some have been converted into garages or additional living space.

Designed by
Many of the homes in the neighborhood were designed by Tucson architect Anne Rysdale. Rysdale started her architecture firm in 1949. At that time, she was the only registered female architect in Arizona. She designed many recognizable Tucson commercial buildings, including Tucson Inn on Drachman, the Sun Building on Speedway, and the Shelter on Grant. But she preferred designing homes.
She was a prolific architect who designed many homes in Tucson, which can be found in Tucson Country Club Estates, Mission Manor, Winterhaven, San Paulo Village, Colonia Solana, Miramonte Terrace, El Encanto Estates, Sam Hughes, and countless others.
In 1954 Lusk Corp hired Arthur H. Rader as the lead architect, so likely homes built in 1954 and later were probably not Rysdale designs. You’ll occasionally find homes in the neighborhood that weren’t built by Lusk. There’s at least one built by Tom Gist and another designed by Paul Buehrer, that I know of in Highland Vista.
