About Sam Hughes Neighborhood
Sam Hughes was a Tucson merchant who arrived here in the 1860s. Hughes helped incorporate the City of Tucson and he assisted in establishing public education here. Sam Hughes Elementary School was named after Hughes first, later the neighborhood adopted the name too.
Location
The Sam Hughes neighborhood is bounded by Speedway, Broadway, Campbell, and Country Club. It is just east of University of Arizona.

Style of homes in Sam Hughes
Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s through the 1950s. The architectural styles in the neighborhood are very eclectic, varying from California Bungalow to Pueblo Revival to Mission Revival to Craftsman styles. Many homes in the neighborhood were designed by Josias Joesler, Tucson’s most celebrated and well-known architect.
Historic District
The neighborhood has been designated as a Historic District which can lead to a lower property tax bill for contributing properties.

Great location is easily walkable to restaurants and shops
Many like the area because of it’s proximity to the University of Arizona, directly west of Sam Hughes. It is convenient to shopping, restaurants, and downtown Tucson.
It’s easily walkable to Flora’s Market Run, Tumerico, and other nearby shops and restaurants at 6th Street and Tucson Blvd.
The southern part of the neighborhood borders the Sunshine Mile (located on Broadway) which has some exciting redevelopment plans underway.

Sam Hughes Neighborhood Amenities
Himmel Park
Himmel Park is located inside the 1 square mile that comprises the popular Sam Hughes neighborhood in central Tucson. Himmel Park has tennis and pickleball courts, swimming pool, lots of grassy areas for softball and soccer, and it’s very own public library branch.
Let the kiddos play, then walk over to nearby Bella’s Gelato Shoppe for a fun afternoon (bonus: Bella’s is dog friendly too)

Himmel Park Library Branch
The Himmel Park Library a cozy little neighborhood library which celebrated it’s 50th year in 2011.

Bike Boulevards
The neighborhood is very bike friendly, having a couple of bike boulevards located on Treat Avenue and 3rd Street which allows an easy bike ride to University of Arizona and beyond.

Public Schools
The neighborhood is serviced by these TUSD schools: Sam Hughes Elementary, Mansfeld Middle, and Tucson High.
